Most of what makes this work is knowledge you already have and can't easily explain to anyone who wasn't there.
An ally father in Sacramento has nine years of combat experience that no hiring manager can parse, English good enough to work in but not to interview in, and nobody in the country who can tell him which parts of his life translate onto a résumé.
You can. You know what a battalion is, what a terp did on patrol, why he doesn't sleep. You don't need the backstory explained and he doesn't need to perform it. That is the whole reason we match veterans instead of general volunteers.
Mentors report the reverse is also true: a standing weekly call with someone who was in the same valley is worth something on both ends of the line.

No. This program is not Houston-only. Many mentors have never met their ally in person.
The formal match closes and staff steps back out. Most pairs keep in touch.
You don't have to. Most calls are about résumés, forms, and driving tests. War comes up when both of you want it to.
Yes. Cohorts of five or more train together and meet monthly. Note it in the last field of the form.
