The Afghan allies who fought alongside our troops are here, on American soil, and largely on their own. We help ally families get on their feet and pair families with an American sponsor team that walks with them for twelve months.
An interpreter's job was to stand close enough to an American patrol to be heard — which meant standing close enough to be remembered. That risk was supposed to be answered with a visa, a status, a place to land. Most of those answers have gone quiet.
Aziz spent over a decade as an interpreter and ally to American forces. After the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, he was hunted for the service records he could not un-write, and pulled out by a volunteer network of U.S. veterans. He resettled in Houston and found hundreds of ally families arriving into nothing at all.
